False Alarm in CyberWar

I’m firmly on the side of the Air Force - and given their mission in protecting the assets of the country, I’m glad to see that they are aggressively preparing for a conflict in cyberspace that never comes.

I’m no fan of botnets and practices that destroy the openness and trust on the net. But, if there are those with capability and motivation to confront the US in this sphere, then there is an obligation to prepare in this dimension as well.

It’s a lot better to have it out in the open, for debate and political oversight than to have it buried in some Black Intelligence program. The effect is the same, and some degree of transparency is an obligation to US citizens.

There sure has not been enough of that lately.

WiMax - Powerful Disruption

Wimax has a two year window to make it or break it. That is the approximate lead time before the LTE or other 3G technology hits the carriers in full force.

Today’s item on mobile IPTV, using Wimax as the underlying transmission and distribution technology offers promise, but there is reason to be skeptical - based not on the technology but on economics and consumer behavior.

The item a few days ago on uptake of hydrogen cars (if they existed) was telling: Only about 15 million of the 240 million automobiles in this country are replaced each year. It would take roughly 15 years of natural replacement to turnover to an new technology.

Wimax TV in vehicles would follow the same curve, much as satellite radio and other add on gadgets.

As much as we would like to imagine (most SDR listeners being early adopters all) the OEM market is what’s needed to drive this into a successful business model. And if you look at the innovation of hard wired iPod accessory sockets that have taken three or four years to be a part of automobile offerings. It might be two years too long.

Joke to Reality in a Year

It was just a year ago that there was an April Fool’s article that talked about wiring up a city by flushing a rubber ball with fiber attached down the toilet.

It turns out that there are over 300,000 miles of sewer in the UK that will be used for exactly that - offering fiber to the home deployed with minimal environmental impact and with speeds exceeding any other ISP in the UK.

Just goes to show that there’s always some truth in any good April Fool’s Day prank - and that the company H2O Systems might be laughing on the way to the bank.

Pukka Problems

Rooting for Wimax

I have to be honest - I’d like to see Wimax see the light of day in the US- and provide some competition to 4G LTE which maybe, just maybe arrive in two years.

The new Sprint-Clearwire deal, with substantial backing from Comcast and other deep pockets could serve a break on the ATT and Verizon duopoly that seems to be emerging.

It’s especially relevant after the Google filing last Friday where Verizon digs deep into some technicalities in the 700Mhz bid on Open Access, and comes up with some sort of deal where - of all things - Verizon subscribers would be exempted and forced into the Verizon walled garden while “open access” is extended to others. I can imagine the cross billing on that one.

The article on Digital Television- and the government’s interest in making sure that goes smoothly - touched on a viewpoint that I had not considered. Basically, something like 98.5% of the population has television access, and literacy rates are in the 85% range. The $40 coupon /converter box is one of the cheapest ways to reach those remaining 15%. Simple as that. And actually, not a bad thing. Especially if you are a politician.

The concluding question- how long will be be before the government pursues broadband access for these same citizens with the same vigor ?

As Boss Tweed remarked in the 1870’s - Regarding Nast’s cartoons, Tweed reportedly said, “Stop them damned pictures. I don’t care so much what the papers say about me. My constituents don’t know how to read, but they can’t help seeing them damned pictures! [1]

That might explain why there’s not quite as much emphasis on broadband.

Redline in the Power Business

The article on Data Center as pollution generators aligns with some other articles that I have seen recently on the state of the power infrastructure, particularly in California. In fact, because of the demand for extremely large amounts of stable power, Google and Intel are both moving facility expansion outside of the state of California.

If you combine the topics of the age and condition of the electrical network with the road and bridge infrastructure of the country, you have to wonder why our political discussions are focused on flag pins.
